So. Has anyone out there actually bothered to examine these wings properly? Considering the inevitable amount of comments they get to one degree or another, I'm guessing none of you have them naturally. It doesn't seem like anyone has bothered to do a medical study, either, if your primary source of information on them is anything to go by.

If you'd like to prove me pleasantly wrong, go right ahead. It would be nice to underestimate someone for a change. Otherwise, well. I'm taking volunteers.

Feelings of suspicion when faced with the unknown are very common reactions, especially in less familiar environments. However, the pursuit of knowledge by necessity involves the pursuit of the unknown. Luckily knowledge is quite unlikely to try to fight back, unless your knowledge involves cornering things which tend to retaliate when cornered.

Considering I happen to be a supercomputer, in the time it takes you to parse this sentence I could have easily drafted, revised, and practiced a speech of considerable length. Repeatedly.

Since you probably don't want the technical definition, I'll put this simply. I'm not human. I am in fact much, much smarter and better at thinking and remembering than a human could possibly be.

So you're a sentient true rune of your world then? Or something like that?

An accurate comparison is not possible without a detailed explanation of the example you have just provided.

The true runes are sentient and powerful magical runes. They tend to control aspects of life such as the sun, night, death or elements. I've only ever seen one.

I mean there are unintelligent golems too, but you seem to not be that.

... In that case, you're welcome to go ahead and think of these "true runes" as being the same as supercomputers. It sounds like there's nothing else you would know of that's closer. So that counts for something, I suppose.

Well. What reason would anyone possibly have for doing that? [ Gears are so outdated after all. ]

Cause that's the most advanced science out there?

In that case, it seems your world has quite a lot of catching up to do.

Gears are engineering, by the way. Not that I'd expect you to know that, but. Now you do.

I will remember that then. The gear smiths of my world call it science but they may just be trying to sound important.

It is a common tactic of humans to classify engineering as science in an effort to make what they're doing sound more like interesting work and less like boring, repetitive construction.

I really don't know. A group of them helped my brother in the civil war so I approved funding of a bunch of experiments. That's really all I know about it all. Most of my training has been with magic and politics.

And what sort of experiments would those be?

Oh, just for devices like elevators and maybe a few more bridges that moved up and down so big boats could get past them. There was also talk on some weapons designs but they hadn't gotten to me yet.

You know, things to make life easier for the people for the most part!

That still sounds much more like engineering than science to me. Not that I can say I'm surprised.

Well, perhaps its simply getting the tools sufficiently advanced so they can move the art up? I'm not entirely certain, but I mean at least its not like that one person who glued toast buttered side up to the backs of cats to try and create a flying machine when he dropped one.
